Palm Cove
Perhaps the most iconic of the Cairns beaches, Palm Cove is known for its coconut palms, beachfront restaurants and relaxed resort atmosphere. Spend the morning walking along the esplanade, enjoy lunch overlooking the Coral Sea or stay for sunset as the light falls across Double Island.
Best for: Long lunches, couples, beachfront dining and a quintessential tropical Cairns experience.
Clifton Beach
Positioned between Kewarra Beach and Palm Cove, Clifton Beach is another peaceful Northern Beaches favourite. The long sandy shoreline and relaxed residential atmosphere make it ideal for visitors wanting somewhere quieter while remaining close to Palm Cove and Trinity Beach.
Best for: Morning walks, families and uncrowded beach time. Bike rides through the tropical outlooks leading to Palm Cove.
Ellis Beach
Continue north beyond Palm Cove and the coastline opens into the long stretch of Ellis Beach. With rainforest-covered mountains on one side and the Coral Sea on the other, it is one of the most scenic sections of the coast between Cairns and Port Douglas.
Best for: Scenic drives, long beach walks and a quieter tropical escape. Enjoy lunch and live music at Ellis beach Bar & Grill.
Kewarra Beach
Quiet, leafy and wonderfully uncrowded, Kewarra Beach feels distinctly local. Coconut palms and tropical vegetation line the shoreline, with views toward Double Island and the surrounding mountains.
It is one of our favourite places for an early morning walk, picnic or peaceful afternoon away from the busier tourist areas.
Best for: Quiet beach walks, picnics, couples and escaping the crowds. As well as walking your fur babies.
Local Tip
The beaches north of Cairns each have their own personality. Choose Palm Cove when you want restaurants and atmosphere, Trinity Beach for an easy all-round beach day, or Kewarra Beach when you simply want sand, palms and somewhere beautifully quiet.
During the warmer months, marine stingers can be present along the Tropical North Queensland coast. Always follow local signage and swim between the red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches.
